Rudolf Adriaan van Sandick
(1855-1933)

An eyewitness accounts

Rudolf Adriaan van Sandick was 27 years of age and had graduated from the Polytechnical School in Delft only six years earlier, when he sailed past Krakatoa and witnessed the largest explosion in recorded history at short range. Apparently his report, “In het Rijk van Vulcaan” (In the Realm of the Volcano), is still being considered of great value in the antiquarian trade. Fortunately the book can also be read online at www.vansandick.com/vulcaan.

The book displays his political engagement. He writes objectively but with compassion, speaks of admiration for “the natives” in the hours of despair, and is concerned about spiritual leaders who seize the calamity to preach violence on the islands . . .

Most pages though are dedicated to the scientific interest, in the footsteps of the geologist Verbeek, exploring the idea of continents floating on the tide of fluid magma deep below. The theory of tectonic plates would eventually be proposed in 1912, by the German meteorologist Alfred Wegener although his arguments still required further scientific thought.
